By John EganAustin dentist Dr. Michael [P.] McCarty has been arrested after authorities found child pornography at his home and office, the Texas Attorney General’s Office said March 4.
The investigation started after the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children received a tip that an Internet user had illegally
uploaded child pornography images to an online group. Authorities allege that in November and December 2010, the 64-year-old McCarty used e-mail accounts registered under this name to upload nearly 400 images of young boys engaged in sexual activity.While searching McCarty’s dental practice in Northwest Austin – Austin Smiles Dentistry – and his home in Northwest Austin, members of the attorney general’s Cyber Crimes Unit found images of child pornography on his personal laptop and his work computer. A search of McCarty’s briefcase uncovered CDs with images and movies containing child pornography, authorities said.
Several times, McCarty has been named a “Texas Monthly Super Dentist” as part of a special advertising section in the magazine.
Under Texas law, possession of child pornography is a third-degree felony. If convicted,
McCarty faces two to 10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. He also could lose his license to practice dentistry in Texas.
The Travis County District Attorney’s Office will prosecute the case against McCarty..
McCarty has been licensed to practice dentistry in Texas since 1973, according to the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners. His current license is scheduled to expire in September 2011. The board’s website indicates that no disciplinary action ever has been taken against McCarty.
According to his website, McCarty is “a recognized leader of cosmetic dentistry in Austin.” He is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and a fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, the website says. On the site, McCarty says he believes “in offering his patients the best of the best in dental technology.”

I have over 1000 dentists in my database who have worked in these Medicaid dental mills that see, touch and feel children every day. I've often wondered how many, if any, were creeps like Dr. Michael P. McCarty, possibly registered sex offenders or worse, undiscovered sex offenders. Odds are there are some.
Don't you wonder what kind of in-depth background checks are performed on applicants. We know all of the mills will hire anything that, and I quote, "has ten fingers".
