Mom of 6 year-old Plans to Sue VCU Medical Center - wtvr
RICHMOND, VA (WTVR) - The mother of a 6-year-old boy who died after a dental procedure last May says she plans to sue VCU.
"People say it gets easier day by day. No, it doesn't", says Crystal Lewis.
One year later, Lewis, the mother of 6 year-old Jacobi Hill still wonders why a simple dental procedure killed her son.
"It's always going to be a question in the back of my mind like, what happened, but I guess we'll never know until I get to the bottom of things", she says.
On May 11, 2010 Jacobi went into cardiac arrest while having his teeth worked on at the VCU Dental Clinic. He was under anesthesia during the procedure. The Medical Examiner says he died of natural causes, but that reason is not enough for Lewis.
[Natural causes?? Like stopped breathing? So why did he stop breathing? I’m sorry, but any child who dies under these conditions, it’s not natural! Becoming more frequent but not natural!]
"Because Jacobi went to his pediatrician the day before and she gave him a clean bill of health. If something did go wrong, why couldn't you resuscitate a perfectly healthy heart? That doesn't make sense to me", she says.
Soon after his death, Lewis says she hired an attorney. Now a year later, she says a lawsuit is ready to be filed against the clinic.
Lewis says the pain of losing her son is stronger than ever.
"Some times it's unreal. It feels like he's still at school and he'll come home, but it's actually harder than before.", she says.
With a new baby boy, she feels blessed. But, says she'll never feel at peace until justice is served.
"Fight it to the end until I get every question in my mind answered because I deserve it.", she says.
Lewis says she plans to file the lawsuit this week. She says whatever the outcome, she'll be satisfied knowing she did what she could.
Prayers go out to Crystal and her “justice” team.
